What To Look For When Purchasing Your First Ukulele

Are you looking to purchase your first ukulele? If so, then Modern Music Learning has the guide for you.

In this blog, we will explore which ukulele to buy, including what you need to look for when buying your first ukulele.

Your First Ukulele: What To Look For

You might be thinking that you could simply just purchase the first ukulele you see in the shop or online, but we highly suggest that you do a little research beforehand. Not all ukuleles are the same, and some ukuleles are actually catered towards beginners!

For your first ukulele, there are several factors to consider, including:

  • Size

Ukuleles come in different sizes, including: soprano (smallest – 20 inches), concert, tenor, and baritone (largest – 30 inches). A soprano ukulele is best for all beginners, especially for those with small hands. If you have slightly bigger hands, consider concert (22 inches) or tenor ukes (26 inches).

  • Shape/Body

There are 2 distinct shapes for ukes: classic (most common) and pineapple (more mellow sound). For beginners, we suggest choosing a classic ukulele to help you familiarise yourself with the standard body shape and style of the ukulele.

  • Material

The material also has an impact on the sound and appearance of the ukulele. Popular ukulele materials are: solid wood (oak, mahogany, koa, spruce…) and laminate wood (mahogany, striped ebony…). Any material is great for beginners – it all depends on preferences.

  • Brand

When buying a ukulele, we recommend going for a trusted brand like: Kala, Mahalo, Yamaha, Alvarez. Renowned brands like these ensure quality and performance.

All of the above can affect the overall price of the ukulele – if you’re looking for something more affordable, there’s nothing wrong with opting for a used (but still good quality) ukulele.

What Is A Good Beginner Ukulele?

When it comes to buying the best beginner ukulele, we recommend looking for ukes that are:

  • Soprano (or concert or tenor for bigger hands)
  • Classic (conventional 8 figure shape)
  • From well-known brands (such as Kala)
  • Affordable
