Meet The DIRECTOR

Meet the founder of Modern Music Learning, Peter Hickman. My passion for teaching music led me to establish this endeavor, driven by a desire to impart knowledge in a way that is not only innovative but also creative, meaningful, and, most importantly, fun.

Embracing progress and new ideas, I am dedicated to incorporating the latest technology into music education. At Modern Music Learning, we utilize the most up-to-date music software and programs to offer an inclusive and enjoyable learning experience for aspiring musicians.

I firmly believe that everyone possesses a musical essence, and music serves as a powerful tool for cognitive development. It has the potential to enhance school performance, social skills, and overall intelligence in children. My ultimate goal is to bring happiness into people's lives through the transformative power of music. If we can achieve that, our mission at Modern Music Learning is fulfilled.

BEHIND THE INSTRUMENTS

Doreen Zhao

Doreen is a classically trained pianist with over 20 years of playing experience and 8 years of teaching. She began piano at age 4 and is passionate about helping students find joy and confidence through music.

Blending classical training with a student-centred approach, Doreen creates a warm, supportive environment where learners of all levels can grow at their own pace and develop a lifelong love for music.

Hon Manawangphiphat

Hon has played bass since age 16 and performed widely around Auckland over the past nine years. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance (Bass) from the University of Auckland (2022) and also plays guitar.

His passion for music extends to songwriting, recording, and production, with strong Pro Tools skills and studio experience. Hon values creativity and improvisation as much as technical skill and loves helping students build confidence, connect with others, and express themselves through music.

Ash Clough

Ash brings energy, creativity, and a bit of banter to every lesson. He’s been playing in bands since he was 13 and now drums in several rising acts in Auckland’s alternative scene.

He specialises in Rock, Punk, Metal, and Alt-Rock, but will teach anything from Pop to Funk and more — wherever the student’s passion lies. Ash focuses on building confidence, solid skills, and a real love for music through rhythm.

Nicole Seo

Nicole is a passionate piano teacher with over 15 years of experience. With a background in jazz and a love for all styles, she tailors each lesson to suit her students’ goals and interests. Her teaching blends strong technique with creativity, helping students build confidence and enjoy learning. Whether you’re a beginner or ready to take your playing further, Nicole makes the journey fun and rewarding.

Sarah-Hope Mil-Curreen

Sarah-Hope is a singer-songwriter from Auckland with a focus on vocals, acoustic performance, and expressive lyricism. She’s been singing since age four, performed in major school musicals, and holds a Diploma in Contemporary Music. With experience in bands like “Kiwi Chameleon” and years of vocal coaching, she helps students build strong technique and find their unique voice.

Ella Bartlett

Ella is a passionate singer and tutor with 11 years of vocal experience. Originally from New Plymouth, she moved to Auckland in 2025 to begin her studies in music and classical performance at university. Ella has performed in numerous local theatre musicals and was a member of the Aotearoa New Zealand National Academy Choir in 2023. In 2024, she had the honour of singing with the Taranaki Symphony Orchestra as part of the local Young Musician Competition. Enthusiastic about sharing her love for music, Ella is committed to nurturing and motivating her students at every stage of their musical journey.

Aisling McGonigle

Aisling is a dedicated musician, with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Australia and performance experience such as being a member of the West Australian Youth Orchestra. Currently completing a Master of Speech and Language Therapy at The University of Auckland, Aisling applies her knowledge to support children with their confidence & communication through music. Her experience in clinical and school settings has deepened her understanding of how music can have an impact on early learning and is committed to providing fun, engaging and learning filled lessons.

James Ander

James has been playing guitar for 16 years and is passionate about how music can positively impact people. A member of various bands since he was 13, he studied contemporary music at S.I.T in Invercargill. James has recently transitioned into teaching guitar and has found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. He is excited to help students of all levels unlock their potential and achieve their musical aspirations.

Cherie Lai

Cherie is an emerging composer and an Honours graduate from The University of Auckland. With 18 years of piano performance experience and an ATCL Diploma in Piano Performance, she is a dedicated and patient musician passionate about inspiring others to explore and learn. Cherie creates an inclusive and engaging learning environment, drawing on her diverse experiences in composition, singing, and instrumental performance. She believes that music education goes beyond reading notes; it is about uncovering the stories and emotions behind the creative process.

Pahan Silva

I’ve been drumming since age 5. I earned a Distinction in Trinity Grade 8 rock and pop drums, and completed Grade 2 classical and Grade 4 rock guitar exams. My journey includes the Blue Notes choir (gold at Big Sing Finale 2023), Ringtones Barbershop (national champs), and various bands and productions.

Georgia Breeze

I’ve been drumming for over 10 years. As well as being an experienced tutor, I’ve also played in college bands, school shows, and drum competitions. I tailor lessons to each student’s learning style, using visual, theory, and practical exercises. I love how drumming boosts creativity, confidence, and brain engagement!.

Yu-Joon An

I’m a Rock N' Roll guitarist with a Bachelor of Music and a Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from the University of Auckland. Playing electric guitar since age 5, I’m now teaching and passionate about sharing the joy and technique of music.

Salina Xiao

I’m a dedicated piano tutor with 12 years of playing experience and a Grade 8 piano qualification. I’m passionate about how music connects us and helps express emotions. I look forward to sharing my love for piano and helping students unlock their musical potential.

Harriet Healion

I began singing at 5 years old, passed Grade 8 Rockschool with honours, won Sing It! 2018, and led my school choir to a highly commended award at the Big Sing Cadenza. I’m excited to inspire others as a singing tutor at Modern Music Learning.

James Brown

As a dedicated music teacher, I empower students to discover their unique voice and cultivate a lifelong love for music. With 9 years of experience across guitar, vocals, piano, drums, and bass, I love how music challenges me to think creatively, innovate, and bring new ideas to life.
