Welcome to the Tutor Hub
At Modern Music Learning, our tutors are the heart of the student experience. You are more than a music teacher — you’re a guide, a mentor, and an essential part of a student’s creative journey.

This Tutor Hub is designed to support you in your role: a place to access resources, connect with our community, and stay aligned with our shared purpose.

At Modern Music Learning, we use a structured, creative, and student-focused approach to guide every lesson. Our syllabus provides consistency across tutors while allowing space for individual teaching style and student needs.

📚 Use the MML Intro Books & Level System
Deliver lessons using MML’s custom Intro Books and colour-coded levels (Yellow, Orange, Green, etc.). This system supports progression, goal-setting, and shared understanding between tutors, students, and families.

🎯 Differentiate Between Private and Group Lessons
Apply appropriate teaching strategies for different formats. Group lessons require shared focus, clear turn-taking, and collaborative energy. Private lessons allow for personalised pacing, deeper feedback, and focused skill-building.

🎗️ Use the Coloured Wristband System
Celebrate progress with wristbands as students move through levels. These visual milestones help keep motivation high and show tangible growth.

🎤 Encourage Participation in MML Events
Promote involvement in performances, KidzRock, band rehearsals, and holiday programmes. These experiences build confidence, create community, and reinforce lesson learning in real-world contexts.

📖 Complete the Teaching Matters Course
All tutors must complete the Teaching Matters induction course and fill in the accompanying booklet. Regular observations and review sessions are part of our commitment to ongoing tutor development and consistent delivery of our syllabus.

🎸 Complete KidzRock & Jr Rockerz Training
Tutors involved in KidzRock and Jr Rockerz will receive additional training. These specialised programmes follow their own structure and goals, and we ensure every tutor is fully prepared to deliver them confidently and consistently.

Clear and consistent communication helps us maintain trust, professionalism, and smooth operations across the MML team. Here’s how to communicate effectively with admin, students, and families:

🗣️ General Communication Expectations

  • Be polite, warm, and professional in all messages — written and spoken.

  • Use clear, encouraging language when providing feedback or addressing challenges.

  • Check and respond to messages via Slack, Opus.1, or email within 24 hours on your teaching days.

📞 Calling in Sick or Running Late

  • If you’re unwell or delayed, text 021 407 986 as early as possible, ideally before 9am on the day of your lessons.

  • Include the names and times of affected students and whether you'd like lessons rescheduled.

  • Do not contact families directly — the admin team will inform parents as needed.

  • We will seek to arrange a substitute if possible to ensure continuity.

👨‍👩‍👧 Communicating with Parents & Students

  • Use the Opus.1 student portal for all communication related to lessons, progress, and scheduling.

  • Do not share personal contact details — direct families to the portal or have them email admin@modernmusiclearning.co.nz.

  • Keep messages concise, kind, and focused on the student’s development.

🕒 Student Attendance & Lateness

  • If a student is more than 5 minutes late, email the office so we can follow up and log it.

  • If a student misses more than two lessons in a row without notice, let the admin team know so we can check in.

💻 Using Slack

  • Use Slack for fast communication with admin or to share updates and ideas with fellow tutors.

  • Check Slack before your teaching day for updates on absences, room changes, or schedule adjustments.

  • Communicate with admin if you're unsure or need support

  • Raise student concerns with care and respect

  • Keep student and parent relationships positive and professional

  • Collaborate with the team and contribute to a positive environment

What do I do if I’m sick or running late?

Text 021 407 986 as early as possible, preferably before 9am. Include your student names, lesson times, and whether you'd like to reschedule. Admin will notify families and seek a substitute if needed.

Can I contact students or parents directly?

No — always use the Opus.1 portal for any messages. This keeps records centralised and ensures consistent communication. If a parent contacts you directly, kindly redirect them to the portal or to admin@modernmusiclearning.co.nz.

How should I communicate progress with parents?

Keep lesson notes up to date in Opus.1 — these are visible to parents. Include brief, positive comments about what the student is working on and any home practice suggestions. If there’s something more sensitive or complex to address, please email the admin team and we’ll help follow up.

Do I need to give regular progress reports?

Not formal reports — just keep your Opus.1 notes current and concise. These serve as an ongoing record of progress for students and parents. For longer-term students, you may occasionally be asked to write a summary at the end of term or before an exam/performance.

What if a parent asks for extra feedback or wants to chat?

Kindly let them know that you’re happy to provide updates through the Opus.1 portal. For more involved conversations, ask them to contact the office so we can help arrange it appropriately. We want to respect your time and keep lessons focused.

What if a student is late to their lesson?

If they’re more than 5 minutes late, email the office so we can follow up and keep a record.

What if a student keeps missing lessons?

If a student misses more than two lessons in a row without notice, let us know. We’ll reach out to check in and clarify next steps.

Where can I find lesson notes, schedules, and student details?

Everything is managed through Opus.1 — your full teaching schedule, student profiles, attendance, and communication tools.

What should I wear to teach?

Smart casual is perfect — neat, approachable, and suitable for a range of ages. Remember, you’re representing MML and setting the tone for a respectful, professional learning space.

How do I handle group lessons vs private lessons?

Group lessons need extra planning: balance attention, keep a steady pace, and encourage peer engagement. Use the MML syllabus as your base and adapt your strategies accordingly.

How do I give feedback or suggest ideas to MML?

We welcome your input! Share via Slack, email, or during tutor meetings. We’re always looking to improve and grow as a team.
